Race Canceled - Ogden Rock-n-Run

The sponsor canceled the race and the next closest one was in Salt Lake City. I didn’t want to drive home from there with impaired people on the road. I had a nice, but cold 4.25 mile run by myself. My friend and running inspiration, Davy Crockett,  was in Arizona for the Across The Years Race. It’s a timed event, whoever runs the farthest in the allotted time wins. He ran 104.39 miles in 24 hours. Web http://www.acrosstheyears.com/cgi-bin/liveresults.cgi?tab=24

They also have people competing 48 and 72 hours.

Cold Snowy Day

Running in the Snow and Wind - lessons learned

The snow has hit pretty hard here in Northern Utah. I read a bit about cold weather running and tried out a few of the recommendations. Merino wool socks work well and I dug out my old backpacking gaiters to keep my lower legs dry. I learned to run into the wind on the way out so the trip back home, when I am more tired, is a bit more comfortable. My peruvian-style knit cap keeps my ears warm, but my wife questioned why I bought the one with a border of little skulls (some nonsense about me being a 51 year-old engineer, not a 15 year old skateboarder). I’m still trying to build the mileage. I registered for the Moab Red Hot 33k on Feb 14th. Paid the fee so I’m now committed.

Walker and Runner living in Harmony

My wife loves walking. I love running. Ideal evening for her is walking on paved roads through the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights. Mine is hitting the trails, running on dirt, even if I have to wear a headlamp. We compromise, I use the neighborhood walk as a warm-up before a run. She volunteers at my races, (though I thinks it’s for the free shirts).

I did the 15k

To stick to my training plan to be ready for a 33k on February 14th I needed to run a 15k today. I hit the trail at 7:30am, it was pretty frosty out this morning. The first 3.5 miles were on a slight decline, then a brutal 800 foot climb in less than a mile. Rolling terrain for the next four miles then 800 foot drop in 1/2 mile and a ’sprint’ (waddle!) back to the house. This week I got a Garmin Forerunner 101 to track my running, it’s a lot better than hand-carrying the GPS from my truck. I’m tired.

Workout:

  • Type: Run
  • Date: 12/06/2008
  • Time: 10:11:43
  • Total Time: 2:17:29.00

  • Distance: 9.3 miles
  • Average Pace: 14:46.7/mile

Me (131) and my buddy Davy Crockett

Yeah, thats his real name. We are at my first 5K in Logan, Utah. Dave is an Ultrarunner. He completed seven 100 mile races in 2008. Dave is my inspiration to keep running and get into shape. We were childhood friends in Seattle. He just happened to show up at the race to do the 10K and parked in the space next to me. We had not seen each other in years. It was a great surprize. I took fifth place (50-59) in the 5K. Davy took first (50-59) in the 10K.
