Peach Days 10k - Brigham City, UT
Set a PR this morning I ran the Peach Days 10k in Brigham City, UT. My time was 1:04:38 which beat my old PR by 5:25. This was my 3rd 10k. The morning was brisk, or beter yet downright cold. It was a good course for a road race. Nice mix of hills and flats. Before the race I heard one lady tell another it was 75% uphill, I just chuckled because that is hard to accomplish on a circuit course with the same start and finish line. I ran well and felt good through the entire race. I was able to visit with old running friends afterwards and met some new friends. Nice race.
Ran another 5 in the afternoon and now my wife just told me we are going for a walk/run at 7:00 PM.

Park City, UT - Funky 5k
I ran in a tough 5k race in Park City, UT. Lots of hills, an especially challenging one near the end, but the last couple hundred yards were downhill to the finish line. The Funky 5k benefitted a children’s art program and was part of the Park City Miner’s Day celebration. 99 of 159 overall, 14 of 20 in the broad M 45-59 AG. At 8000′ elevation, the oxygen content in the air is noticible! Later in the afternoon another 3 miles at marathon pace.

Mt. Naomi Wilderness and Box Elder County 5K
My buddies Lon and Todd and I had an adventure in the Mt. Naomi Wilderness in Northern Utah Aug 19-21. We started in the rain on the Bunchgrass Trail up the canyon to White Pine Lake. The next day we climbed around the back side of Mt. Magog and summitted Naomi Peak (9979 ft. elevation) then descended to High Creek Lake. On Saturday we climbed up and over to Cherry Peak, then down Cherry Creek Canyon to Richmond, UT.
Today (8-28) I ran the Box Elder County Fair 5K. 2 mile easy warm-up, registered and waited for the start. Good turn out with a lot of high school runners. I ran at, for me, a good pace with a decent kick at the end to keep from getting passed by the women’s 50-59 AG winner. First place in the 50-59 AG, complete with ribbon and trophy. My wife asked if I was going to carry the trophy around all day and I told her I had considered it. Entry fee? Free. That was nice. Nicely run event.

N.U.T.S. Wolf Mountain 5K
Running on Wolf Mountain was amazing. The N.U.T.S. folks were well organized with great volunteers. Picture perfect day. I fat fingered my Garmin at the start and didn’t look at it until the aid station, still read all zeros, so I wasn’t able to judge time/distance. The course for the 5K started with a ski lift ride. I was surprized that the trail had so many uphill climbs. It was also quite technical, rocks, roots, stream crossings, etc. As I approached the finish I saw 39+ minutes and I thought, well at least its not 40. Then I realized it was 39:58. With the Garmin working I know I could have pushed it a bit harder. Ended up 16th out of 34, 2nd in AG.
Later in the evening I hit the Three Mile Creek trail. My wife met me later and we power walked a 1-1/8 mile up the canyon and ran back down. 7 miles plus the race for 10.1 total. A great end to the day.
Updated daily log:8-10 5mi; 8-12 5mi; 8-13 3.1mi; 8-14 10.1mi; 8-15 2.5mi; 8-16 5mi; 8-17 5mi

5 Miles up Three Mile Creek
Run up Three Mile Creek Canyon. My wife joined me for the last mile and RAN the whole way (picture me excited!). She had walked up the road paralleling the creek and met me at the trail/road intersection on my way down. She said it was the longest she has ever run. Great way to end a trail run.

Crazy Bob’s Bairgutsman - 10.25 mi/4800 ft Elevation
Second year running Bairgutsman. I got stuck behind a long line of slower runners on the first part of the single track. This is a crazy race. First mile is pavement. Miles 2-5 are single track trail with 6 creek crossings, a ‘fern forest’, with brutal climbing the whole way. It took me 14 minutes longer to get up the hill (4800 feet of verticle) than last year. I made up seven minutes of that on miles 5-10.25, so I as happy with that. I had invited quite a few of the neighborhood runners to run the race, three of them took me up on it. We all had a great time. One of them, Lon Stevens, finished in 2:40:23, 33rd overall. This was his first trail race. There were thunder storms all around the area which cleared the air and cooled it down. By the 6:00 AM start, the storms were gone. The wet spring left us with many more short scrub oaks with their skin-tearing branches across the trail. My legs are pretty torn up. The motto of this race is appropriately “Conquer Thyself”. It is definately an exercise in determination.
Finish line - Pam, Jim, Nancy, Lon.
The previous Wednesday 8/4, my wife was in Tacoma, WA, so I took the day off work and went to Mt. Timpanogos for a training run. 14.25 miles with 4800 feet of elevation gain to the summit (11,071′) and back. Beautiful forest, fields of wildflowers, waterfalls, and ~35 mountain goat sightings. On the way down a thunderstorm kicked up and I got pummeled with 3/8″ diameter hail. Dang, that hurt. I took refuge under three tall pine trees. Just where you want to be with lightning around.
I also have not been posting my daily runs so I added them up and posted the total today.

N.U.T.S. (Northern Utah Trail Series) Trail 1/2 Marathon
Great time running the inaugural N.U.T.S. (Northern Utah Trail Series) Trail 1/2 Marathon. This was run in the Wasatch Mountains just east of Ogden, Utah. Before the start we had a bit of rain. I saw some friends, Ryan and Lindsey Lauck and Jim Skaggs. I told Cody Draper, the eventual winner, that Jon Allen (a co-worker and Cody’s training partner) said to tell him that I would be his pacer today and to line up in front of him at the start, but then I took my normal place at the back of the pack. Perfect weather for running. While on the trail I met more great running friends. The trail had a lot more elevation than I had anticipated, but the last few miles to the finish were all downhill, so that was appreciated. 13.67 miles with 2800 ft elevation gain/loss. Great event, nicely organized.

Perry City Independence Day 5K (PR)
PR’d the 5K distance by 9 seconds. Perfect morning for a race. The age group was 45-59, so I didn’t do well in the AG placing (considering I’m 53). There was another ‘gray-hair’ in front of me, so I kept as close to him as I could. He was 40-60 feet ahead of me for the first 2-1/2 miles. I figured I could catch him on the ‘hill’. By the top I was about 7 feet behind him. We turned the corner and with about 500 yards to the finish I was able to pass him and could tell by the sound of his footsteps that he was not trying to catch back up. It felt great to PR. My wife was at the finish line cheering me on so that was an added bonus.
